Special Guests Ron Mann and Mercy Lam from FilmsWeLike

koln 75.jpg

Köln 75 follows 18 year old Vera Brandes as she defies her conservative parents to organize a Keith Jarrett concert in Cologne in 1975.  Despite near failures, the impromptu performance became  the iconic album The Köln Concert, which went on to become the bestselling solo jazz album – and the bestselling solo piano album of all time.

The director decided to make a film about the promoter instead of the musician.  He sees it as a punk rock film, rather than a jazz film.

“It’s the story of every great piece of art ever made.  The necessity of problems, the obstructions.”

“I like to think of it as a story of two master improvisers, not one.  Keith Jarrett is great at improvising on piano.  But Vera was a master at improvising at life and making things happen.”
